Job Description: School-Based Mental Health Counselor
Position Overview:
The School-Based Mental Health Counselor is responsible for providing counseling and support services to students within an educational setting. The primary objective of this role is to promote mental health and well-being by addressing students' emotional, psychological, and social issues that may impact their academic success. The counselor will collaborate with students, parents, teachers, and other stakeholders to develop appropriate intervention strategies, facilitate healthy coping mechanisms, and enhance overall student well-being.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Conduct individual counseling sessions with students to address personal, social, emotional, and behavioral concerns.
2. Utilize evidence-based therapeutic techniques to assist students in developing effective coping strategies and improving self-esteem.
3. Facilitate group counseling sessions to address common issues experienced by students, such as stress management, conflict resolution, and relationship building.
4. Collaborate with teachers and school staff to identify students who may benefit from counseling services and develop intervention plans.
5. Conduct assessments and evaluations to identify students with mental health disorders or specific needs, and provide appropriate referrals to external resources or specialists.
6. Maintain accurate and confidential records of counseling interventions, progress, and outcomes.
7. Provide crisis intervention and support for students experiencing immediate emotional distress or trauma.
8. Educate students, parents, and staff on mental health topics, preventive care, and strategies to promote emotional well-being.
9. Collaborate with community mental health agencies, social workers, and other professionals to ensure a holistic approach to student support.
10. Stay updated with current research and best practices in the field of school counseling and mental health to enhance professional knowledge and skills.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Master's degree in counseling, social work, psychology, or a related field.
2. Valid licensure or certification as a mental health counselor or therapist.
3. Proven experience in providing counseling or therapy services to children or adolescents.
4. Sound knowledge of various counseling theories, techniques, and interventions.
5. Strong understanding of child and adolescent development, mental health disorders, and behavioral issues.
6. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to establish rapport with students, parents, and school staff.
7. Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical guidelines in counseling practices.
8. Effective problem-solving and conflict resolution abilities.
9. Demonstrated organizational skills to manage caseloads, documentation, and scheduling.
10. Flexibility and adaptability to work in a dynamic educational environment.
